POULTRY MORTALITY FROM HURRICANE KATRINA
Poultry farmers that have had high mortality losses due to
Hurricane Katrina may qualify for financial assistance from NRCS. The
assistance is available for the purpose of burying dead birds. All catastrophic
losses and burials on or after August 29 may be eligible. Payments will be
limited to $1250 per house. Poultry farmers must follow NRCS specifications
(see Attachment 1)

POLICIES AND PLANNING
GUIDELINES FOR BURIAL OF MORTALITY AND BROILER HOUSE CLEAN-OUT RESULTING FROM A
CATASTROPHIC EVENT:
1.
Cost-share is authorized for the burial of animal mortality resulting
from a catastrophic event; i.e., excessive heat, power failure, severe weather,
disease outbreak, as a result of Hurricane Katrina.
SPECIFICATIONS:
1.
Trench burial techniques shall be used for disposal of mortality. For
mature birds, carcasses must be buried at least six feet (6’) underground. (8
ft. deep trench, four feet of birds and 6 feet of fill, with 2 feet above
natural ground.
2.
The bottom elevation of the burial trench must be a minimum of two feet
(2’) above the seasonal high water table.
3.
The top of the burial site should be mound to provide positive drainage
away from the site.
4.
The burial site shall be no closer than 300 feet from a water supply well
and from adjoining property line, and 600 feet from nearest un-owned (by
producer) occupied dwelling.
5.
Trench shall be located so that contributing drainage area above the site
is minimized.
6.
Venting of burial trench shall be provided by using 4-inch diameter,
perforated pipe, placed at an angle above the layer of birds every 10 feet.
7.
Total clean-out of poultry house is required (approximately 12-inches of
cake removal).
8.
Litter removed from the broiler house shall be covered to protect from
rainfall or buried.
9.
NRCS maximum payment shall not exceed $1250 per house.
10.
During field evaluation, a visual inspection for cultural resources will
be conducted following NRCS procedures. (Call NRCS for evaluation)
11.
Trenches dug on sloping land must be on the contour.
