Dam Rehabilitation on Second Creek
Submitted by Kim Harris, State Conservation Engineer

NRCS is currently rehabilitating Second Creek Dam 12 located near Natchez, Mississippi.   The dam was originally constructed in 1968 with a low hazard classification because there was no threat to human life.  Since then, several homes have been built downstream thereby raising the hazard class to high.  The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality regulates dam safety and requires that high hazard dams meet specific state design criteria.  Because Dam 12 did not meet current criteria, NRCS was able to get partial funding.  The Adams County Board of Supervisors and Adams County Soil and Water Conservation District have partnered with the Mississippi Soil and Water Conservation Commission and NRCS to finance the rehab.

When a dam is rehabilitated from a low hazard to a high hazard class, the top of the dam is raised and the auxiliary spillway is widened in addition to modifications to the principle spillway and wave protection measures.

NRCS has contracted with CAMO Construction Company for $1.2 million under the Rehabilitation Legislation PL-106-472.  Completion is estimated to be November 2008.
