Aquanda Jones, District Conservationist
Aquanda Jones Assists in Improvements to Gilmer Park

Through the efforts of the Indianola Soil and Water Conservation District and NRCS, a grant was secured through Entergy to make improvements to Gilmer Park in downtown Indianola.  I have always enjoyed the flexibility of NRCS to utilize partnerships in an effort to offer our services and expertise to benefit private lands and the community as well.

The Macon Lake Partnership CCRP project that consists of over 800 acres utilizing the best management practices of riparian forest buffers, bottomland hardwoods, wetland restoration, field borders, and filter strips is to achieve the landowner's objective of both saving the family farm and restoring the native wildlife habitat on the farm.  The local NRCS staff and area biologist worked closely with the landowner and our siser agency, FSA, to create a final product.

Working with farmers is a rewarding experience.  They are hardworking, family orientated people who love their land and heritage.  Sine the origin of SCS after the Sust Bowl to Hurricane Katrina, NRCS has served as a leader in producing better stewards of our natural resources to ensure clean water and healthy soils for future generations.  Our practices, whether structural or vegetative, are all designed and recommended to yield the same benefit: conservation.  The mission of NRCS provides an adequate summary of the passion of our workforce in Mississippi.  We truly are helping people help the land.
