NRCS Announces Sign Up for Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program

Jackson, MS, June 6, 2008 - Mississippi landowners can apply June 2-20, to enroll land in the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP), the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced.

Al Garner, NRCS Assistant State Conservationist, says landowners who apply for WHIP will know by July 18, if their applications have been approved.

NRCS uses WHIP to provide technical expertise and cost-sharing to enhance habitat on eligible land for upland and wetland wildlife, threatened and endangered species, and other types of wildlife identified as rare or declining species.  Many types of land, including grassland, woodland, wetlands, stream and riparian areas, agricultural land and non-agricultural land may be eligible for WHIP funds.

To sign up for WHIP, contact the NRCS office serving your county.  This information can be found at find a service center.  You can also get more information about WHIP online at http://www.ms.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/MSWHIP.html.
